Our position
We want this site to be usable by everybody, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard only, magnification, or a device with reduced motion turned on. Accessibility was built into this site from the start rather than added afterwards.
What we aim for
We are working to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA as our target standard. We believe the site substantially meets it. We are not claiming certification, because a self assessment is not an audit, and we would rather tell you what we have actually done.
What is built in
- A skip link to the main content as the first focusable element on every page.
- Semantic landmarks, a single H1 per page, and headings in logical order.
- Every form control has a visible, associated label. Errors are announced, not just coloured.
- Visible keyboard focus on every interactive element, and focus is trapped inside the accessibility panel and modal dialogs while they are open.
- Disclosure controls carry
aria-expanded, and the progress through the membership intake is announced. - Colour is never the only way information is conveyed. The cost breakdown chart, for example, carries a fully labelled key with values as well as colour.
- Motion is reduced automatically when your device requests it through
prefers-reduced-motion. - Images carry descriptive alt text, and decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
The accessibility panel
Every page has an accessibility control in the header, marked with a figure icon. It is our own, not a third party overlay, and it does not attempt to reinterpret the page for you. It lets you:
- Scale text up to 140 per cent.
- Switch to Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed for low vision readers.
- Increase line, letter and word spacing.
- Underline and outline every link.
- Turn on a reading guide that follows your pointer.
- Raise contrast, or invert colours.
- Stop all motion and animation.
- Enlarge the cursor.
Your choices are saved on your own device and are never sent to us.
Known limitations
Being straight about it rather than claiming perfection:
- Some photography is stock imagery whose alt text describes the scene generically. It will improve as real local photography replaces it.
- The translation control is provided by Google Translate. The quality of a machine translation, and its behaviour with a screen reader, is outside our control.
- Headings are sized by script to fit their column. If scripting is unavailable they fall back to a fluid size, which is readable but less precise.

If you need information from this site in another format, ask and we will provide it.
