Channel

The maintained deep-water lane through otherwise shallow water.

The channel is the road: dredged or naturally deep, marked on both sides, and often the only honest water in sight. The markers define its edges, the chart shows its depths, and everything outside it is at your own risk and draft.

Stay right in a busy channel, cross it at right angles when you must, and never anchor in it. Drifting across the channel at sandbar o'clock is the local traffic sin.

The markers are the road lines. Outside them the Grand Strand turns to sandbar fast, and the Waterway adds its own yellow shorthand.
