Inlet

The gap where inside water meets the ocean, and the sharpest water on this coast.

An inlet is the tidal doorway between the protected inside water and the open sea, and it concentrates everything: current, swell, shoals that move weekly, and traffic. On an ebb tide against onshore wind, an easy-looking inlet grows short, steep, breaking seas in minutes.

Inlets get planned, not wandered into: state of tide checked, weather checked, jackets on, and an honest read of whether your boat and your day need the ocean at all.

On this water: Murrells Inlet and Winyah Bay are the local doors. Rental agreements almost universally forbid the inlet run, and the jetty chop on a summer ebb is why.
