Idle speed

The slowest speed that still steers the boat, and the legal pace of every no-wake zone.

Idle speed is engine at idle, transmission in gear, boat moving just enough for the rudder effect to work. It is the pace of no-wake zones, marina fairways, fuel docks, and the 50 foot circle around anything vulnerable.

Steering at idle takes patience: the boat answers slowly, wind and current get a vote, and short shifts between idle-in-gear and neutral are how you trim the pace without waking. If you need a burst of throttle to hold course, take it briefly and come back down.
